Transitions is a local non-profit who’s primary focus is end poverty for women & children. Throughout the years Heylman Martin Architects has been involved in creating new or improved spaces as various needs and programs arise.
Starting with the Transitional Living Center, a turn-of-the-century orphanage remodeled into temporary residences for women & their children, there has been a collaboration almost as long as Transitions has been around.
The Women’s Hearth is a warm, safe, welcoming daytime drop-in center in the core of the City of Spokane. Here women can seek shelter from the streets, connect with services, take a shower, learn new skills, express themselves through the arts or connect via the internet. A community kitchen is open to all. The Hearth advocates for change in systems that oppress women.
The New Leaf Bakery Cafe is a training program that teaches hands-on work experience to low-income women while being supportive and nurturing self-confidence and self-sufficiency. The remodel of the training kitchen & the off-site sales kiosk have helped this program thrive.
Transitions Offices were designed to fit into an under-utilized basement to consolidate the administration and reduce rental expenditures. Together with the AmeriCorps construction team, these offices were developed as uniquely comfortable spaces.
