Originally constructed as a Catholic girls’ school in 1891, the renovation and revitalization of the Holy Names Academy into a dynamic retirement community was no small task. The architects, general contractor and developer took great care to work within the historic preservation regulations set forth for the historic tax credit funding by the National Park Service and the State of WA Historic Preservation Office. The school building, contemplated for demolition, was awarded an AIA Award for Excellence and a State of WA Historic Preservation Award as “an excellent example of the adaptive reuse of an abandoned historic structure for the benefit of our society today.”
